She opens her eyes to another day
painted in ever darkening shades of gray
her lips are void of emotion, never smiling
they gather dust, in silence crying.
Desperately she seeks, as if for a high,
kind words untainted by a white lie,
her soul, though already knowing, still pushes on
reaching for freedom only to find it has gone.
The rain falls and she forgets sadness and such
to welcome the comfort in its humid touch
revealing truths bought like candy for a dollar,
while her eyes remember, for a moment, their color.
