We are the same,
yet different enough
to be best friends.
We were young
the color of our skin
was never complicated.
You had seven brothers,
I had one baby sister.
We alternated houses for dinner.
I celebrated your holidays
and you celebrated mine,
we both prayed to a God.
Walking down main street
we defied class, staring it down
with unflinching eyes.
